What Is MJF 3D Printing?

Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) is an industrial powder bed fusion process developed by HP. Unlike laser-based systems, MJF uses an inkjet array to deposit fusing and detailing agents onto a bed of nylon powder. An infrared energy source then passes over the build area, fusing the treated powder into solid geometry in a single pass per layer.

This layer-at-a-time approach means HP MJF builds entire trays of parts simultaneously, producing full builds in roughly 24 hours. The result is parts with uniform, isotropic mechanical properties (up to 48 MPa tensile strength across all axes), fine detail resolution, and smooth surface finishes that closely resemble injection-molded components.

Like SLS, MJF is a support-free process. The surrounding powder bed supports each layer during the build, enabling complex geometries, internal channels, and nested assemblies without sacrificing surface quality.

Medium-Volume Production

MJF is cost-effective for production runs in the 50 to 5,000 unit range. Full-tray builds and high packing density keep per-part costs competitive without tooling investment.

PA12 is the standard MJF material. It delivers a balance of stiffness, impact resistance, and fine-feature resolution, making it the go-to choice for rigid functional parts such as enclosures, brackets, housings, and mounting fixtures. PA12 produces consistent, repeatable results across builds.

PA11 MJF

Polyamide 11

PA11 is more ductile and impact-resistant than PA12, with better elongation at break. It is well-suited for snap fits, living hinges, wearable components, and automotive clips.

PA12-GB MJF

Glass Bead-Filled Nylon

PA12-GB reinforces standard PA12 with glass beads, increasing stiffness and dimensional stability while maintaining MJF's resolution. It is the right choice for housings, connectors, and structural components that must resist creep and thermal deformation under sustained load.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane

TPU is a flexible, rubber-like material available on the MJF platform. It offers high elasticity, abrasion resistance, and energy return, making it ideal for gaskets, seals, shock absorbers, grips, and wearable cushioning components.

Vapor Smoothing

Chemical vapor smoothing exposes MJF parts to a controlled solvent vapor that melts the outermost layer of nylon, sealing surface porosity and producing a semi-gloss, injection-molded-like finish without altering critical dimensions.

Sealed, watertight surfaces: ideal for fluid-handling and enclosures that need to block moisture ingress.
Smoother cosmetic finish: reduces layer-line visibility for consumer-facing and display parts.
Easier to clean: non-porous surface resists staining and is suitable for repeated handling.

MJF (Multi Jet Fusion) is an industrial powder bed fusion process developed by HP. It uses an inkjet array to deposit fusing and detailing agents onto nylon powder, then infrared energy fuses each layer in a single pass. The result is parts with isotropic mechanical properties, smooth surfaces, and fine detail resolution.

We offer four MJF materials: Nylon PA12 (rigid, general-purpose), Nylon PA11 (ductile, impact-resistant), PA12-GB (glass bead-filled for higher stiffness), and TPU (flexible, rubber-like). PA12 is the default for most functional parts. PA11 is preferred for snap fits, hinges, and impact-prone applications. PA12-GB adds dimensional stability for structural housings. TPU is for gaskets, seals, and flexible components.

±0.3 mm (±0.012") or ±0.3%, whichever is greater. Layer height is 0.08 mm. For precision fits such as holes, snaps, or hinges, design in 0.2 to 0.5 mm of clearance. Post-process CNC machining is available for features requiring tighter tolerances.

Both MJF and SLS produce strong, support-free nylon parts. MJF fuses full layers in one pass (faster builds), produces slightly smoother surfaces, and is more cost-effective at higher volumes. SLS offers a broader range of specialty materials (glass-filled, carbon-filled composites). For most functional parts in PA12 or PA11, the two processes deliver comparable results.
